Meet Amber Studio, the Romanian business creating mobile games for Disney

Mobile Games

Amber Studio is one of the largest independent games studio in Romania, whose story began about 3 years ago, when Dragos Hancu decided to quit his corporate job and set up his own IT business, in a small flat in Bucharest.
The initial investment amounted to 50.000 EUR and was recovered in less than 1 year, followed by other highly profitable years. At the moment, after having created games for big clients, such as Disney and Twentieth Century Fox, Amber Studio is preparing to launch their first copyrighted game, 100% Romanian.

What makes Amber Studio so successful?

Human resources, networking and knowledge of the industry
The heart and soul of any games studio is represented by human resources. Dragos Hancu (38), the founder and CEO of Amber Studio, had spent many years in IT corporations such as Gameloft, Jamdat and Electronic Arts, before he actually started his own business. This means that he had expertise in the gaming industry and had developed business relationships with potential customers and partners.

Business strategy
Even though Dragos was eager to develop his own game, he knew that most game studios in Romania, with up to 6 employees, had tries to do this and failed. Instead, he chose a more pragmatic approach: in the first years, they would work for other companies and, once they had enough financial, technological and human resources, they would launch their first game.

Market-driven product
In fact, the strategy for their game is also set: they plan to enter the mobile industry by developing an application game, available for all platforms (Android, iOS and Windows). The game will be downloadable free of charge starting from the beginning of 2016, because they believe that nowadays you cannot survive with a Premium product in the gaming industry.

Amber Studio estimates a turnover of 6 million dollars only in 2015, of which 40% comes from the projects developed for Disney. Regarding the business structure, the main pillars of this independent games studio are the QA, Deployment and Creation departments.
